Located on the eastern coast of Australia, it is the nation’s oldest and largest city, with a population of 4 million people. Originally the home of Aboriginal peoples, Sydney was first settled by Europeans in 1788. In the 19th century the settlement grew to become the capitol of the British colony of New South Wales, now the most populous of Australia’s six states. In the last 50 years Sydney’s population has greatly diversified from its original anglo-celtic roots and today it is one of the world’s most multicultural cities with significant numbers of people from European, Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds. Australia itself, with a quarter of its citizens being born overseas and another quarter with at least one parent born overseas, is a culturally diverse nation, and Sydney is the most multicultural of its cities.

The city is located along a 50km stretch of coastline 34 degrees south of the equator, has a mild climate and is in close proximity to world famous beaches, rivers and bays, national parks and the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains.
