Enrolment information for second-year students for Semester Two, 2009

Exiting with the BTeach at the end of Semester One, 2009

All Year 2 students will be sent an email from Edwina Hood in mid May asking them if they wish to exit with the BTeach. All students who wish to exit with the BTeach will need to complete the “Exiting with the BTeach” form which will be sent with the email (the form is also available on the forms page of the faculty website). This form is to be returned to the faculty office by June 15. If you complete the form you will not be enrolled in the MTeach.

Enrolling in the MTeach Internship in Semester Two, 2009

If you are planning on continuing to the MTeach you will be automatically enrolled in the MTeach and the MTeach units of study: Action Research Project and Conference (EDMT6201), and Internship (EDMT6200). This will occur about mid July, after results are posted and before your internship starts on July 27. More information will be sent via email. There is no need to come in person to the University to enrol.

If you wish to suspend your MTeach Internship you will need to complete a “Suspension of Candidature” form and submit it to the faculty office.

Pre-Prac conference

The date of the pre-prac conference for first-year students has changed to the following day:

Monday, July 27, 3–4pm (first day of Semester Two)
Institute Lecture Theatre 1

At this meeting you will receive your shiny new prac manual and a briefing from the directors of the Division of Professional Experience. Attendance is compulsory – absentees will not be permitted to do the first practicum (Professional Experiences 1)

Timetables

Timetables for the Bachelor of Teaching/Master of Teaching course can be downloaded from the faculty's timetables page.

Course handbooks

The 2010 handbook is now part of the 2010 Faculty of Education and Social Work Handbook, copies of which can be purchased from the Student Centre or downloaded from Handbooks Online.

The handbook contains information about enrolments, the course program and calendar, the names and contact details for key academic and administrative staff, lists of units of study in the primary- and the secondary-teaching programs, course policies and regulations, and Senate resolutions affecting the degrees.

Orientation programs

New and continuing students have separate, compulsory, full-day orientation programs, which will take place in the Footbridge Lecture Theatre.

First year
Date: Wednesday, February 25, 2009
Time: 9.30am–4.30pm

Second year
Date: Friday, February 27, 2009
Time: 9.30am–2pm

Students enrolling in units of study from more than one year are advised to attend both sessions. Anyone who is unable to attend the scheduled orientation for their year should ask classmates and specific unit-of-study coordinators for relevant information.

Among the topics listed on the program for the 2009 orientation days are:

  • Timetables: the latest copies of the primary and secondary timetables are available from the faculty's timetables page

  • Coursework: an overview of the coursework in each stream of the program (early childhood, secondary, primary weekday, primary evening and weekend)

  • Tutorial group allocations: consult the relevant unit-of-study coordinator or check the MTeach noticeboard on level four

  • Policies and procedures: handbooks list the faculty and course policies affecting candidature.

  • Practicum and internship placements: the noticeboard on level six near the Professional Experiences Office and the Professional Experiences website both list information about professional-experiences placements.

  • Key course dates: the MTeach noticeboard on level 4 and this website have a list of key course dates for 2009.

Enrolments and pre-enrolments

New students

First-year students will enrol at the Faculty of Education and Social Work building at the date listed in their letters of offer of a place.

Continuing students

Continuing students must pre-enrol for second year and any incomplete first-year units during the University's pre-enrolment period (October to mid-November).

Important dates for changes to enrolment

If you wish to vary your enrolment you must do so before the cut-off dates, either through the faculty's Student Administration office or online at MyUni). The different types of variation – adding a unit of study (with permission), withdrawing from one or more units of study, discontinuing with permission (not to count as a fail), and discontinuing without permission (to count as a fail) – have different deadlines.

Students who apply to vary their enrolment in person at the office need to have all forms completed, approved and processed by the appropriate dates; variations for continuing students cannot be granted on deadline day because they require the approval of the relevant program director.

It is worth noting that discontinuations that occur after the:

  • deadline for withdrawal (the 'census date') will incur a HECS-debt (or full fees) for the discontinued unit/s of study

  • last date for 'discontinue with permission' will incur a HECS-debt (or full fees) and be recorded as a ''fail' result for the discontinued unit/s of study.

The key dates associated with enrolment and additional information about students' enrolment responsibilities are published on the 'Once you're enrolled' section on the University's Starting Uni site.

Scholarships

BTeach and MTeach candidates are eligible for a number of scholarships offered by the University, the faculty and other bodies. Information about University and faculty scholarships and prizes is available from the Scholarships and Prizes section of the faculty website.
