Course structure
The MTeach/BTeach course is organised into a number of programs each with a defined set of enrolled units of study: the secondary program, the primary program and the honours program. As well, the core units of study, which are common to all programs, are collectively referred to as Study 1.

Graduating with the BTeach or the MTeach
After passing all coursework in the first three semesters of a graduate-entry teaching degree, students can choose whether to exit with the Bachelor of Teaching qualification or continue for a further semester and complete the additional units of study required for a Master of Teaching: EDBT6200 Internship and EDBT6201 Action Research Project and Post-Internship Conference.
In making a decision about the qualification with which they wish to graduate, students should consider:
- the fourth (MTeach) semester is currently free for local students and costs AUD$2760 for international candidates
- the fourth semester is not an Austudy-eligible program
- the internship is unpaid (under the agreement between the parties to the internship)
- based on the NSW DET Salary Scale of 1 January 2009, the salary differential between five-year trained (MTeach) graduates and four-year trained (BTeach) graduates is about $2700 in the first year of teaching. This increases to about $6900 in the eighth year of service, by which time MTeach graduates will have reached the top of the normal salary scale (BTeach graduates will reach this level one year later)
- for local students the cost of any other master's qualification from this University is at least $9600
- because MTeach graduands will be eligible for a casual teaching number from the NSW DET, they can be qualified to teach during the fourth school term of their final semester of study.
Units of study
Bachelor of Teaching units
Study 1
All candidates commencing a BTeach enrol in one Study 1 unit of study each semester. In the tables below, these units of study are marked with an asterisk.
Study 2 (Primary)
Candidates in the primary program enrol in units of study in the primary school key learning areas (KLAs).
Study 2 (Secondary)
Candidates in the secondary program enrol in two units of study each semester in their specialty curriculum area(s).
Professional experiences
All BTeach candidates complete two school-based practicum placements, one during the second semester of their programs, and one during the third.
Master of Teaching units
As soon as the results for the third semester of study have been finalised, every student who has passed all 72 credit points in the BTeach program and has not completed the "Exiting the program with a BTeach Notification Form" will be automatically enrolled in the two MTeach units of study: EDMT6200 Internship and EDMT6201 Action Research Project and Post-Internship Conference. This should occur early in July.
Honours units
The honours program is only available to students completing the Master of Teaching. It commences in the second semester of study, after the mid-semester break.
Depending on whether they are studying primary or secondary teaching, those hoping to be admitted to the program will undertake preliminary honours coursework as part of their studies in either EDBT5537 Special Interest Unit 1 (Primary) or EDBT5600 Professional Studies 2 (Secondary).
During their second year of study, candidates who meet the requirements for progression in the honours program will enrol in EDBT6119 Honours 2 (in Semester One) and EDMT6202 Honours Special Study (in Semester Two, in lieu of the EDMT6201 Action Research Project and Conference unit undertaken by pass candidates).

Exiting the program with the Bachelor of Teaching
Each June, second-year students intending to exit the course with the Bachelor of Teaching must:
- advise the Division of Professional Experiences they will not be requiring an internship during Semester Two and
- lodge an "Exiting the Program with BTeach Notification Form" with the faculty's Student Administration Office (available from the office or by download from the Current Students Forms Page).
Exiting BTeach students who fail to lodge the appropriate form with the faculty Student Administration Office will be enrolled in the MTeach semester even if they have notified the Division of Professional Experiences of their wish to graduate with the BTeach.
