Education I Program
Education I is designed to help you get started on a professional journey in education in general and teaching in particular.
Education I comprises two units of study: EDUF1018 and EDUF1019. The first is an introduction to the study of Education, Teachers and Teaching. The second is Human Development and Education.
The study of Education forms the basis of sound practice as a teacher and educator. The true educator knows not only ‘what to do’ as a professional, but ‘why it is done’ – practice being the ‘what to do’, and theory being the ‘why it is done’. For the professional educator, theory and practice should inform one another.
The units of study in Education I, II, III & IV are not only meant to provide a foundation for professional practice. They are also useful for students interested in understanding educational phenomena from other points of view – such as the needs of an informed citizenship or the requirements for good policy making.
The units of study in Education I form a common introduction for first year education students to the Faculty of Education and Social Work and the B Ed degree. Dr Lesley Scanlon is the First Year Experience Coordinator. She organizes a number of mentoring and social events each year for first year students. These assist many students in making the transition into the Faculty and University. I hope students will take good advantage of these.
If you need advice or assistance in any part of the Education I program, depending on your query or concern, contact your tutor, one of the Education I coordinators or Dr Scanlon.
Members of the Education I teaching team are available to help you. We look forward to your studies with us. We hope that you enjoy your association with the University, the Faculty and the program in which you are enrolled, and that what you learn with us will be helpful for the years to come.

Program Coordinator (Education I, II, III & IV)
