Careers - Secondary - Design & Technology

A career in Design and Technology teaching

In NSW and other Australian states prospective Design and Technology teachers usually need to be qualified to teach in Design and Technology and at least one specialisation from the Technological and Applied Studies key learning area, or in one other secondary school teaching subject (curriculum area). If you are interested in a career as a Design and Technology teacher you would normally be required to complete university studies in :

  • subjects within the Design and Technology (or Technological and Applied Studies) learning area
  • Education as a social science
  • professional and curriculum studies (teaching methodology)
  • a second teaching subject (e.g. Science, Mathematics or Art) may be possible, although normally Design and Technology/Technological and Applied Studies is done as the only teaching area.

Coursework (degree) options for prospective Design and Technology teachers

If you wish to become a teacher in Design & Technology, specialising in one or more of the Technological & Applied Studies (TAS) disciplines, you must complete an undergraduate degree in a technology related area (e.g Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture) followed by either a Master of Teaching or a Bachelor of Teaching

Prerequisite and recommended studies: School leavers

No HSC subjects are prescribed for those intending to pursue a career in Design and Technology/Technological and Applied Studies teaching, as it is possible to enrol in 1st year university subjects appropriate for D&T/TAS without having studied these in the HSC. However, it is clearly desirable that those intending to study Design and Technology at university in order to become a D&T/TAS teacher, should include a Design and Technology subject(s) in their HSC. As well, you should also choose HSC subjects that are relevant to a second teaching area if you wish to teach outside the TAS learning area (see the information under the particular second teaching area you are interested in).

UAI Entry levels

Entry into the undergraduate program for Design and Technology teaching occurs after candidates have completed an appropriate Level 4 TAFE Certificate.

Prerequisite studies: Graduates

Graduates with a first degree which includes studies appropriate to teaching in a Design and Teachnology area may be eligible for admission to the Master of Teaching/Bachelor of Teaching program. Entry into the postgraduate MTeach/BTeach course is competitive and will be based upon the following criteria and interview:

  • completion of a major in a discipline from the Design and Technology area (e.g engineering, computer studies, food technology, architecture, applied science, practical art) in an appropriate undergraduate degree
  • completion of a minor in a second teaching subject, if you wish to qualify to teach in another subject outside the D&T area (e.g. in Mathematics, Art or Science)
  • level of achievement in undergraduate studies (grade average)
  • good communication skills
  • demonstrated commitment to teaching as a profession
