Careers - Secondary Teaching - Music
A career in Music teaching
In NSW and other Australian states prospective Music teachers usually need to be qualified to teach in Music only, but may choose to be qualified to teach in one other secondary school teaching subject (curriculum area). If you are interested in a career as a Music teacher you would normally be required to complete university studies in :
- Music
- a second discipline area (e.g. English, Geography, a Language, Mathematics, Science or TESOL) if you wish to be qualified to teach in another teaching area
- Education as a social science
- professional and curriculum studies (teaching methodology)
Coursework (degree) options for prospective Music teachers
The Faculty of Education and Social Work offers Music either alone or in combination with another teaching area, in its graduate Master of Teaching or Bachelor of Teaching program, following an appropriate undergraduate degree in Music.
For more information see that for the postgraduate Master of Teaching/Bachelor of Teaching program.
Prerequisite and recommended studies: School leavers
Those intending to study Music at university in order to become a Music teacher, should include a Music subject in their HSC. As well, you should also choose HSC subjects that are relevant to a second teaching area if you also wish to teach in another subject beside Music (see the information under the particular second teaching area you are interested in).
