English language requirements for faculty courses

If English is not your first language you will need to provide proof of your English language proficiency before admission can be confirmed. The following are some acceptable ways of doing this:

Bachelor of Teaching/Master of Teaching
All teachers in Australian schools must have a good command of the English language, and thus the English proficiency requirements for these courses are higher than those for many other graduate courses. As the course includes professional experiences in Australian schools as part of the enrolled coursework, candidates must be 'good' to 'very good' users of English. If English is not your first language, you are required to provide proof of your English proficiency. International applicants are required to do this through a recognised test result submitted with their application (see below). Local applicants who have not done their first degree in Australia, or in a country where English is the first language, will need to provide evidence of English proficiency, or attend an interview at the discretion of the Faculty. The minimum requirements are:

  • IELTS 7.5 with a minimum of 7.0 in each band
  • TOEFL 610 for the paper-based version of the TOEFL plus 5.0 on the Test of Written English (TWE) or 253 for the computer-based version of the TOEFL plus an essay rating of 5.0

Graduate Certificate in TEFL

  • ELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in each band
  • TOEFL 520 for the paper-based version of the TOEFL plus 4.0 on the Test of Written English (TWE) or 190 for the computer-based version of the TOEFL plus an essay rating of 4.0

All other postgraduate courses

  • IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band
  • TOEFL 577 for the paper-based version of the TOEFL plus 4.5 on the Test of Written English (TWE) or 233 for the computer-based version of the TOEFL plus an essay rating of 4.5.
  • evidence that you have completed one year of full time study in an English medium university

Scores more than two years old cannot be accepted.

Note: Local students applying for admission on the basis of qualifications obtained from a university or other institution where the language of the institution was not English are also required to meet these requirements.
