Study Abroad in and About Australia

The Faculty of Education and Social Work offers a new program of study specifically designed to suit the needs and interests of international students studying at the University of Sydney. Each of the four units of study in the program examines distinct aspects of Australian culture with a focus on children and young people’s learning and development. While all units of study in the program are concerned with learning, it is viewed from a broad perspective that goes well beyond that which takes place in schools and classrooms to include sport, leisure, entertainment and other cultural activities.

All units of study in this program are delivered in ways that, while maintaining academic rigour, are accessible and of interest to international students from a wide range of majors or faculties other than education. The ways in which units of study in this program are taught is also distinctive. Based on sound contemporary learning theory, learning and assessment in each unit of study is structured around students’ first hand experiences of Australian cultural and educational practices provided by field trips to relevant sites.

The integration of lectures, readings, field trips and assessment provides for comprehensive understandings of unit content. Through this approach, and the particular content of the units of study in the program, international students will also gain valuable insights into, and understanding of, Australian culture and society.

Study abroad and exchange students may enrol in all units in the program or choose to enrol in some of the other units of study offered in the Faculty. They may also combine units of study from the Faculty of Education and Social Work Study Abroad Program with units of study in other Faculties across the University of Sydney, provided they meet the standard pre-requisites for those subjects, and the English Language requirements.

The study abroad program includes:

  • Sport and Learning in Australian Culture (EDUH4058) (Previously EDUF3000)
This unit of study provides students with a socially critical perspective from which to appreciate the meaning, practice and place of sport in Australian culture.
  • Indigenous Sport, Education and Culture (EDUH4053)
This unit of study provides students with a socially critical perspective on the range of social, cultural and economic issues facing indigenous Australians.
  • Learning in Outdoor Education (EDUH4052)
Learning in Outdoor Education examines the nature and significance of learning that takes place through these experiences of natural environments in Australia, with a particular focus on how and what children and young people learn in outdoor education.
  • Australian Theatre, Film and Learning (EDUF3034)
This unit of study will examine the nature of theatre and film in Australian cultural and educational settings. A particular focus will be placed on theatre and film for and by young people, and the range of learning that takes place through young people’s engagement in, and appreciation of, theatre and film.

Education Study Abroad courses are administrated jointly by the Faculty of Education and Social Work, and the University International Office. More information on how to apply...
