Master of Learning Science and Technology

The MLS&T is a hands-on, project-based program that caters to people wishing to gain expert skills and knowledge in designing successful learning experiences with technology.

The graduate certificate and graduate diploma are generalist qualifications. At master's level, two specialised streams are offered: Professional and Research.

Professionals in e-learning

The Professional Stream is designed for those who work or wish to work in the field of e-learning within companies, government organisations or educational institutions. It is intended to help those seeking to advance their careers in the field of ICT-supported learning by providing them with expert knowledge, structured experience, and an internationally recognised qualification. This stream is suited to individuals wishing to work as managers, designers, advisers, educators or specialists in technology-supported learning. It includes core subjects in emerging educational technologies, and the psychology and design of e-learning, as well as change management, organisational learning and systems thinking.

Researchers of ICT-supported learning

The Research Stream is intended for those who wish to conduct research into ICT-supported learning and are likely to progress to a PhD in the field. It includes core units of study that cover emerging educational technologies, research frontiers, and the psychology and design of technology-supported learning. This stream includes a dissertation on a topic of the student's choice.

Unique to Sydney Uni

Only Sydney University's Faculty of Education and Social Work is home to the Centre for Research on Computer Supported Learning and Cognition (CoCo Research Centre), a world-leading centre for research in computer-supported learning and cognition. The CoCo Research Centre's internationally recognised professors teach the master's program courses, together with a team of staff, all of whom are specialists in ICT-supported learning and research.

The MLS&T is both targeted and flexible. Study options include online and part time and every subject was created from the ground up using research-based expertise emerging from the learning sciences to establish courses that give unparalleled insight into the design, management and research of ICT-supported learning.

Through the CoCo Research Centre, postgraduate students gain access to specialised technologies and facilities, including a combination of virtual and physical space equipped with mobile, wireless and collaborative learning technology.

Entry requirements

Proof of English-language proficiency must be provided with enrolment applications from some Australian and all international students for whom English is a second language.

As well, all applicants must submit proof of one of the following with their applications:

  • a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, information technology, arts (informatics), psychology, or computer science and technology

  • any undergraduate degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent institution and either relevant postgraduate studies or one-year's full-time professional experience in a field applicable to the MLS&T course content.

Applicants with experience or qualifications that they believe are equivalent to those listed above should contact the faculty to discuss their eligibility.

Course structure

Students log on each week to a virtual classroom. Online sessions consist of discussions with instructors and peers, structured around essential topics and learning goals.

Classes are scheduled after standard working hours to accommodate students in full-time employment. Compulsory face-to-face workshops are held at either end of every semester to allow for personal interaction within classes and with lecturers.

Students present their project work at the on-campus sessions, which also include opportunities to use the faculty's facilities, participate in classes using campus computers and contribute to live webcast events hosted by the CoCo Research Centre.

The four core units of study comprise the Graduate Certificate in Learning Science and Technology; completing two units of study from the electives' list as well as the core units constitutes the Graduate Diploma in Learning Science and Technology.

The additional – and quite different – units of study required for the MLS&T(Research Stream) and MLS&T(Professional Stream) are listed separately on the pages dedicated to those degrees.

Core units of study

All graduate-certificate, graduate-diploma and all master's candidates must complete the following units of study.

Elective units of study

Graduate-diploma students must enrol in two of the following units of study; master's candidates (Professional Stream), one. Additional details relating to the units of study required to complete each stream of the master's degree are published on the applicable web page.

Further study

Students undertaking the Master of Learning Science and Technology are able to proceed to enrolment in a postgraduate research degree on the basis of exemplary results in their studies.

In particular, the MLS&T Research Stream is designed for students wishing to proceed to a PhD.
