Graduate Certificate in Dying, Death and Palliative Care

The course is designed to meet the demands of health and human service professionals in the fields of life threatening illness, dying, death, hospice and palliative care and to strengthen the capacity of health and human services to provide holistic care.

The program is underpinned by a strong foundation in the social sciences. It aims to encourage education, social policy and professional practice in these fields.

Sydney University's Graduate Certificate in Dying, Death and Palliative Care aims to enhance the knowledge of social workers, health and human services professionals in the personal and social dimensions of illness, dying and death, critical analysis and reflective practice, the ethical dimensions of professional practice, evidence based research and influencing social policy for end of life.

Our flexible program is designed allows students who so desire to credit their Graduate Certificate towards further study at Diploma or Masters level.

Staff maintain a broad range of community involvements, including sitting on local, state and national advisory boards, serving on community welfare organisations' boards, and providing advice to a range of welfare agencies.

Structure of the Program

The Graduate Certificate program is taught across two semesters.

Students take the following units of study:

  • SCWK 6944 - Death, Dying and Mourning (Semester 1)
  • SCWK 6943 - Practice: Theory Development (Semester 1)
  • SCWK 6945 - Palliative Care: Policies and Practices (Semester 2)
  • SCWK 6942 - Dying, Ethics, Policy and Politics (Semester 2)

Entry requirements

To apply for the Graduate Certificate in Dying, Death and Palliative Care, you should possess a Bachelor of Social Work degree, or related degree in Humanities, Social Sciences or Health Sciences,

plus at least one year's full-time employment in a related field.

Furthering your studies

Students can complete 2 more units of study (total of 6) to progress to a Diploma of either Policy Studies or Social Work.

Students with a credit average can complete 2 more units of study (total of 8) to progress to a Masters of either Policy Studies or Social Work.

Local 2009 fees are AUD$1,620 per unit of study.
