Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program is intended for overseas teachers of English who wish to obtain a formal qualification, gain knowledge and skills in teaching English as a foreign language, and develop increased fluency in English.

The Grad Cert TELF is an effective pathway for students who are not eligible for direct entry into the Master of Education (TESOL) as students require a minimum English entry requirement of IELTS 5.5.

The Graduate Certificate in TEFL is completed in one semester (commencing March) and there is no provision for part-time study.

Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in TEFL students can proceed directly to Masters level of study in the Faculty of Education and Social Work.

Why study at Sydney University?

The Graduate Certificate in TEFL at the University of Sydney provides students with contact with contemporary Australian culture, the opportunity to learn English in a native speaking context, to prepare students to teach in settings where English is the primary mode of communication and an understanding of modern approaches to English language teaching.
The course provides graduates with confidence in their ability to communicate professionally in English and to select, devise and use appropriate teaching tasks and materials. The course develops graduates skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing English in academic settings.
