Master of Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) (Off-Shore Mode)
The Master of Education in TESOL has been designed for practitioners who seeks to develop their professional expertise and further their understanding in the areas of applied linguistics and language education, and particularly for those in the area of English language teaching to children, adolescents or adults.
The off-shore mode of the program allows students to complete part of their studies in China (at Fudan University) and the remainder of their studies in Sydney. Upon successful completion of the 8 units of study, you will be awarded a Master of Education in TESOL from the University of Sydney.
The program explores a range of issues relating to language teaching and learning, applied linguistics and socio-cultural contexts of education. It also develops themes relating to the practical issues of language teaching and learning in a second foreign language context, and investigates the theoretical basis of these issues in the light of recent research developments.
Structure of the program
The Master of Education (TESOL) program requires a year (2 semesters) of full-time study (or 2 years/4 semesters of part-time study).
Students are required to undertake 8 units from the following list:
- Language as Social Practice,
- Contemporary Developments in ELT,
- Second Language Acquisition,
- Intercultural Language Education,
- Methodology and Language Teaching,
- English for Specific Purposes,
- Teacher Professional Development in EFL,
- Research Methods in Language Learning,
- English in Academic Settings.

Entry requirements
To apply for the Master of Education (TESOL), you should have:
- An undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution
- A language teaching qualification OR at least one year's full time (or part time equivalent) language teaching experience at school, college or university level.
- Sufficient english language proficiency.
