The Master of Education (Higher Education) is designed to introduce primarily university teachers to the current principles, debates and practices of higher education. This is a unique context in which you are encouraged to develop scholarly, research-led approaches to teaching and engage in activities and tasks designed to cultivate critical reflection on higher education. The Institute of Teaching and Learning offers a staged program of academic study leading to a qualification in university teaching and postgraduate degrees in higher education. The units of study are taught in conjunction with Faculty of Education and Social Work.
The higher education designation provides you with opportunities to reflect on educational theory and research from the perspective of your own experiences through the scholarship of teaching and learning. The courses are designed to support you in developing your professional expertise in order to better understand and enhance your professional practice.

Furthering your research

The Institute for Teaching and Learning is committed to fostering a vibrant community of Higher Education research students with links to pedagogical research in the disciplines. Doctoral students in the ITL have undertaken studies on a range of topics in the area of teaching and learning in higher education utilizing both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Specific topics include research-led teaching, graduate attributes, the relationship between teaching and research, quality assurance of teaching and learning, information and communication technology in teaching and learning, academic development and problem-based learning.
Entry requirements
To enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education), applicants must:
- be a graduate of the University of Sydney (or equivalent institution), or have been awarded a diploma of the University of Sydney (or equivalent institution) of three or four years' duration, and
- have completed postgraduate studies or have gained professional experience either full-time for one year or part-time for a period considered by the faculty to be equivalent to one year full time in a field judged by the Faculty to be appropriate to the certificate or, in the opinion of the Faculty, hold equivalent qualifications or complete other conditions as specified in Chapter 9, section 47 of the University of Sydney (Amendment Act) Rule 1999 (as amended), plus
- have completed the three day Principles and Practice in University Teaching and Learning program offered at the Institute for Teaching and Learning
To apply for the Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Higher Education), applicants must have:
- completed the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education), and
- be currently engaged in some form of University teaching, and
- meet the standard Faculty of Education and Social Work entry requirements
Fees
Local Students
Local 2008 fees are AUD$1,470 per unit of study.
The University’s tuition fees are reviewed annually and may be varied during the period of study. The exact tuition fee for your course may depend on the specific units of study in which you enrol.

NB: Course fees are waived by the University of Sydney for its staff. Staff must provide evidence of employment by the University of Sydney, such as a current pay slip, with the application.
