Master of Education (Languages)
The Master of Education (Languages) provides a range of opportunities to examine current key issues in Languages and cultures education. The designation is well suited to teachers of Languages in Australian schools, or to those who teach foreign languages in other schooling contexts.
The Master of Education (Languages) allows students the opportunity to learn along with experienced lecturers and classmates from many parts of the world.

Sydney University has a long and successful tradition of teacher education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Faculty has an ongoing program of undergraduate teacher education, and active partnerships with teachers, schools and systems in NSW and also interstate and internationally.
The Faculty has facilities purpose built for teacher education, including specialist facilities in the areas of computing, science & technology, art education and drama education.
Structure of the Program
Masters Program (Master of Education (Languages))
The Master of Education (Languages) program requires a year (2 semesters) of full-time study (or 2 years/4 semesters of part-time study).
Students are required to choose 8 subjects in total,
- including 4 core units from the Core Units list below, and
- 2 elective units from the Elective Units list below, and
- two additional units of study from outside the program, but within the Faculty of Education and Social Work OR any approved postgraduate Language unit from the Faculty of Arts OR two additional units from the elective list below
Graduate Diploma Program (Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Languages))
(Please note that this program DOES NOT lead to a professional teaching qualification).
Students who are not eligible for entry into the Master of Education program, or who may wish to undertake a shorter period of study, may be able to enrol in the Graduate Diploma program.
Students are required to choose 6 subjects in total,
- including either 2 or 4 core units from the Core Units list below, and
- either 2 or 4 elective units from the Elective Units list below
Graduate Certificate Program (Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Languages))
(Please note that this program DOES NOT lead to a professional teaching qualification).
Students who are not eligible for entry into the Master of Education program or Graduate Diploma program, or who may wish to undertake a shorter period of study, may be able to enrol in the Graduate Certificate program.

Furthering your research
Students undertaking this designation are able to proceed to enrolment in a postgraduate research degree on the basis of exemplary results in a Dissertation and/or all units of study in the designated degree.
A number of pathways into higher research are available within the Faculty through Masters and Doctoral studies.
Entry requirements
To apply for the MEd (Languages), applicants must possess a teaching qualification or hold an Australian recognised undergraduate degree and at least one year's full time (or equivalent part-time) language teaching experience at school, college or University level.
Fees
Local Students
Local 2008 fees are AUD$1,470 per unit of study.

International Students
International 2008 fees for the Masters program are AUD$19,440 p.a. (for a year of full time study - 48 credit points or equivalent). Fees are reduced proportionally for students undertaking the Gradate Diploma or Graduate Certificate.
