Prerequisites for the BTeach and MTeach in school counselling
Prospective students for the graduate-entry school counselling degrees will need to have:
- psychology honours or an equivalent fourth year, such as an APS-approved Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology
- sufficient studies in a secondary-school curriculum area to meet the prerequisites for that area listed in the table below.
Teaching training is part of the preparation to become a school counsellor; however, this degree is specifically designed to prepare suitably qualified persons in psychology to work in schools as a school counsellor, rather than as a classroom teacher. The honours or equivalent fourth year in psychology is required for provisional registration as a psychologist in NSW.
Conditional offers and concurrent studies
Applicants who are one unit (equivalent to one quarter of a semester of full-time study) short of meeting the prerequisites for the secondary-school curriculum area of their choice may be given special permission to study the deficient units with another faculty or at another institution concurrently with their BTeach/MTeach studies. The conditions of enrolment by special permission for concurrent studies are listed on the general prerequisites page for graduate-entry teaching.
