Bachelor of Teaching and Master of Teaching
The Bachelor of Teaching and Master of Teaching are graduate-entry teacher-education degrees. Candidates initially complete the BTeach (three semesters) and then have the option of immediately undertaking a fourth semester to graduate with the MTeach.
The program has been designed for people who already have a bachelor's degree in one or more discipline areas and who are seeking a teaching qualification. Applicants must have an initial degree with a range of undergraduate studies appropriate to their chosen teaching specialisation/s.
Available designations
Each of the two degrees in the graduate-entry-teaching program is available in the following designations:
- Early Childhood for teaching children aged 05 years in preschools and childcare centres.
- Primary for teaching schoolchildren from Kindergarten to Year 6.
- Secondary for teaching schoolchildren from Years 712.
- School Counselling for a career in counselling children in education environments from preschool to Year 12. In this program candidates specialise in one secondary teaching/curriculum area as well as in school psychology.
None of the courses in the graduate-entry-teaching program are offered by distance mode and none have mid-year intakes. Application forms for 2010 entry and further information about applying is available by clicking on this link.
Why Sydney University?
Higher quality
Because the BTeach/MTeach program is designed to prepare high-quality graduates for the demanding teaching profession, it is more academically rigorous than the Diploma of Education. Our graduate-entry teaching degree program was established in 1996 and is the longest running degree of its kind in Australia. It remains an innovator in teacher education.
Better experiences
Our extensive program of schools-based experiences at partnership schools (school visits and two practicum blocks in the BTeach program and a nine-week internship in the MTeach) provides our students with unrivalled preparation for teaching.
Greater diversity
Our wide range of specialisations allows our BTeach and MTeach candidates to choose between qualifying to teach in two curriculum areas or as specialising to teach in one.
Higher-level degree
The honours qualification is integrated into the master's course for high-achieving candidates and the MTeach option allows local students to graduate with a master's degree at no extra cost. Eighty-five per cent of our graduate-entry teacher-education students choose to complete the additional semester necessary to complete the master's program.
Fantastic reputation
The University of Sydney has an international reputation for excellence. Many of our BTeach/MTeach students are offered full-time employment before completing their degrees. Our graduates' outstanding performance in their profession has contributed to the reputation the program has in Australia and overseas for providing leadership and innovation in teacher education.
Leading teaching staff
Because faculty teaching staff are highly regarded researchers in their fields, students are exposed to cutting-edge methodologies in research and education. The course promotes a teaching and learning environment that integrates self-directed inquiry and case-study learning experiences in small-group seminars, augmented by lectures, tutorials and ICT-based learning experiences.
