Prerequisites for the BTeach and MTeach in primary teaching

Because primary teachers are required to teach across a range of Key Learning Areas (KLAs) from Kindergarten to Year 6 (K–6), applicants must have university studies in at least three of these to be considered for admission to the program.

Applicants for the graduate-entry primary-school-teaching course must have completed an undergraduate degree (or equivalent studies) that includes either:

  • studies in four different KLAs, for at least one year in each case (1 year/2 units of study in four separate subjects/areas from the table below)

or

  • studies in three different KLAs for at least one year, including one which must have been studied beyond 1st year level (2 years/4 units of study in one area, and 1 year/2 units of study in two other areas from the table below).

KLA Related areas of academic study may include
English English with a strong core component of study of English literature, communications, creative writing, language studies (English), linguistics (may be counted for one KLA), literature studies, media studies (ie the theoretical study of media or where the product is a literary text)
Mathematics pure or applied mathematics, statistics (one unit only may be counted, provided it was studied as a stand-alone unit), other studies of mathematics that are relevant to the central concepts, modes of enquiry and structure of the content/discipline(s)
Science and Technology agriculture, architecture (two units only may be counted), biology, biotechnology, chemistry, computing studies, design [interior, industrial, graphic, fashion, product, landscape (two units only may be counted)], engineering (chemical, mechanical, civil, electrical, environmental), food technology, geology, materials science, media production, medicine, nursing, physics, psychology (may only be counted for one KLA)
Human Society and its Environment Aboriginal studies, anthropology, archaeology, Asia or Pacific studies, business studies, cultural studies, economic history, economics, environmental/land use studies, futures studies, geography, government and citizenship, history, industrial relations, languages (including Aboriginal languages), linguistics (may only be counted for one KLA), legal studies, psychology (may only be counted for one KLA), political science, sociology, studies of religion
Creative and Practical Arts dance (including practical experience in choreography and performance in several dance styles and dance history/theory, drama including experiential involvement in making and performing drama), music (including singing, playing and moving, as well as listening and composing within a wide repertoire), visual arts (including art making and art history/theory)
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education physical-education studies, family studies, health studies, health promotion, human movement studies, nutrition education, sports science



Special admission and concurrent studies

Applicants who are 1–2 units (up to one half of a semester of full-time study) short of meeting the prerequisites for admission to the Bachelor of Teaching may be given special permission to study the deficient units at another faculty or institution while also studying for their teaching qualification.
