Prerequisites for the BTeach and MTeach in secondary teaching
Terminology"Single method" and "double method" are terms used to describe the curriculum area or areas that students wish to teach."1st Teaching Method" and "2nd Teaching Method" refer to the depth to which prospective students have studied a teaching-related discipline area in their undergraduate degree. In general, "1st Teaching Method" indicates a major sequence (3 years/6 units); "2nd Teaching Method" indicates a minor sequence (2 years/4 units). |
Applicants need to meet certain subject-specific prerequisites, and must be eligible to enrol in either:
- one double-method curriculum area (from those available as 'double methods' in the table below)
- two single-method curriculum areas (from those available as 'single methods' in the table below).
Eligibility to study curriculum areas that are available as a double method is assessed according to the criteria listed under the 1st Teaching Method.
As well, applicants' previous study in teaching-related discipline areas must meet the NSW Institute of Teachers' subject requirements for accreditation to teach in their chosen curriculum areas and, if applying to undertake single-method study in two curriculum areas (see option 2 above), satisfy the Teaching Method criteria for each, at least one of which must have been studied to 1st Teaching Method depth.
The curriculum areas that are offered are reviewed annually and insufficient enrolments will lead to cancellation.

Conditional offers and concurrent studies
Applicants who are one unit (equivalent to one quarter of a semester of full-time study) short of meeting the prerequisites for one single-method curriculum area, or two units short of meeting the prerequisites for two curriculum areas (as either two single-method curriculum areas or one double-method curriculum area) may be given special permission to study the deficient units concurrently with another faculty or at another institution.
