This combined degree offers students a secondary school teaching qualification in the following areas of humanities and social sciences:

  • English
  • Drama
  • History
  • Languages (may be done as a double-teaching method: Arabic, Chinese, Classical Hebrew, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek)
  • Classical Hebrew and Judaism
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • Visual Arts
  • Geography*
  • Commerce/Economics*
  • Mathematics*

*Students may major in these subjects but will need another Arts major in humanities to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts.

The two degrees are completed in five years. However it is possible to exit the course at the end of Year 3 with a Bachelor of Arts only, or at the end of Year 4 with a Bachelor of Education only. Students must seek approval from the Faculty. Students electing to exit with a Bachelor of Arts only must provide notification in writing at the end of the second year and submit this notification to both the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts.

Course structure

 

This program is strongly supported by the use of technology with extensive use of the Internet for close collaboration with schools in Australia and overseas.

First year

  • Two junior units in Education
  • Six junior units from the Faculty of Arts (4 units must be teaching subjects - e.g. English, History)

Second Year

  • Three senior units in theories and practices of teaching
  • One Teaching and Learning unit of study
  • Four senior Faculty of Arts units of study (continuation of first-year teaching units)

Third Year

  • Four Curriculum methods units of study
  • Teaching and Learning units of study (including 20 days practice teaching)
  • Two senior Faculty of Arts units of study (continuation of major teaching subject)

Fourth Year

  • Continuation of curriculum methods
  • Teaching and Learning units of study (including 25 days practice teaching)
  • Two senior Faculty of Arts units of study (finalisation of major teaching subject)

Fifth Year

  • Option of undertaking a third teaching method in TESOL, Teaching English Internationally, or Cultural Diversity
  • Teaching internship
  • Units to complete requirements for the Bachelor of Arts
