This degree prepares students to teach in the following areas in secondary schools:

  • Mathematics
  • Mathematics/Computing Studies
  • Mathematics/Science

Students must undertake Mathematics as a major subject. However, this degree program allows students to undertake Mathematics as a double or single teaching subject. As a single teaching subject it can be coupled with Computing Studies or a wide range of Physical Sciences.

The two degrees are completed in five years. However it is possible to exit the course at the end of Year 3 with a Bachelor of Science only, or at the end of Year 4 with a Bachelor of Education only. Students must seek approval from the Faculty. Students electing to exit with a Bachelor of Science only must provide notification in writing at the end of the second year and submit this notification to both the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Science.

Course Structure

 

The program is strongly supported by the use of technology with extensive use of the Internet for close collaboration with schools in Australia and overseas.

First Year:

  • Two junior units in Education
  • Four junior units of mathematics (3 credit points each)
  • Four junior units from the Faculty of Science (two of these must relate to the second teaching method if one is sought)

Second Year:

  • Three senior units in theories and practice of teaching
  • One teaching and learning unit of study
  • Two intermediate Mathematics units of study (continuation of your major teaching subject)
  • Two intermediate Faculty of Science units of study (these must relate to the second teaching method if one is sought)

Third Year:

  • Four Curriculum units of study
  • Teaching and Learning units of study (including 20 days practice teaching)
  • Two senior Mathematics units of study (continuation of major teaching subject)

Fourth Year:

  • Continuation of Curriculum methods
  • Teaching and Learning units of study (including 25 days practice teaching)
  • Two senior Mathematics units of study (finalisation of major teaching subject)

Fifth Year:

  • Option of undertaking studies in Teaching English Internationally or Cultural Diversity
  • Teaching internship
  • Units to complete requirements for the Bachelor of Science
