Overview

Course Duration: 5 years full-time
Assumed Knowledge: Mathematics. Other assumed knowledge depends on subjects chose – see faculty handbook.
Recommended studies: For Mathematics teachers – HSC Mathematics Extension 1

2009 UAI: 83.10
UAC Code: 511608

This degree prepares students to teach in the following areas in secondary schools:

  • Science
  • Science/geography
  • Science/mathematics

Students must complete a major in one teaching science area, such as biology, chemistry, geology or physics. Students must also complete at least one year of study in a second science. One year of either chemistry or physics must be included in the science studies.

Science can be taken as either a single or a double teaching method.

If studied as a single teaching method, the main science subject must be coupled with a second teaching method such as geography or mathematics. As well, a second science subject must be studied for at least one year.

Science undertaken as a double teaching method requires students to include a second science as a minor, and a third science must be studied for at least one semester.

Students are advised that, because not all units of study offered by the Faculty of Science directly relate to the teaching of science in the school system, students must seek enrolment advice to ensure that the science units chosen adequately prepare them for the teaching of science.

The two degrees are completed in five years. However it is possible to exit the course at the end of Year 3 with a Bachelor of Science only. Students electing to exit early with a Bachelor of Science must provide notification in writing at the end of Year 2 and submit this notification separately to the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Education and Social Work.
