Embedding Diversity: Towards a culturally inclusive pedagogy
The ‘Embedding Diversity: Towards a Culturally Inclusive Pedagogy’ project has been a team effort from the outset. It was initially made possible by by the initiative and significant foresight shown by Robyn Ewing and Donna O’Connor in their application for funding. Their successful application for a 2006 TIES grant ensured the project began. Jane Moore was employed as the project officer in August 2007, initially for a six month full time appointment with an extension for a further 6 months. Fran Waugh guided the project whilst Donna O’Connor was on leave and Lindsey Napier assisted the project at each level. Nigel Bagnall offered a driving force for the project initiatives and lent his guidance and support unreservedly to all aspects of the research project.
The ‘Embedding Diversity: Towards a Culturally Inclusive Pedagogy’ project had five key initiatives to be carried out which include to:
- Develop curriculum materials that can be used to support learning and teaching in diversity, particularly focusing on an Aboriginal perspective.
- Assess curriculum for diversity and develop curriculum content for established Units of Study that embeds diversity in to all faculty of Education and Social Work degrees especially in Education I-IV.
- Develop modules addressing diversity in the classroom, with particular emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural experiences of learning and teaching.
- Develop a blended learning initiative for these modules of study, including, resources such as course readings, activities, case studies, revision and website links.
- Coordinate the development of a professional development short course to academic staff in the University through the Division of Professional Learning, on teaching and learning issues around diversity, with particular emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander themes.
The Faculty support for the above initiatives has grown as the project has developed. The realisation amongst the faculty that real change was needed has evidenced itself. Indeed, the faculty have committed to creating change from within and should be congratulated on this approach. There is a palpable commitment to change and a realisation of the path ahead.
