Scholarships and prizes for undergraduate and graduate-entry students

Undergraduate and graduate-entry students at the faculty are eligible for a range of scholarships and prizes.

Many of these are offered and administered internally by either the University or the faculty. Others are offered and administered by external bodies on a competitive basis across a number of institutions.

Scholarships and prizes that are open to all graduate-entry and undergraduate students in the faculty are listed on this page. Others apply only to students undertaking particular courses. These can be found by clicking on the links below or the sub-menus at the left of this page.



Marion Macaulay Bequest Scholarships

Marion Macaulay was a graduate of the University of Sydney who spent many years in the teaching profession and was closely associated with women's and educational professional associations. She bequeathed her estate to the University of Sydney to be applied in the area of humanities.

These scholarships have been offered since 1995 to undergraduate or postgraduate coursework students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Education and Social Work who will be travelling overseas for the purpose of gaining credit towards their degrees, either in the form of approved exchange or an approved professional experience such as an internship or practicum.

The value of the scholarship is $7500 regardless of the destination or duration of stay, and applicants who already hold a scholarship of $5000 or more will receive $5000. Applications close 4.30pm, Thursday, November 26, 2009. Further information and applications.


Government-funded scholarships

The Commonwealth Scholarships Program, aims to increasing higher-education participation by students from low socio-economic status backgrounds.

Two types of Commonwealth Scholarship are open to all graduate-entry and undergraduate students. Both types are tax-free and neither affects Centrelink payments. Enquiries may be directed to the University of Sydney Scholarships and Prizes Office.

Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships

These scholarships, which last for up to four years, provide financial help to students who are having difficulty meeting their education costs. The annual value of the scholarship in 2009 was $2207.

Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships

These scholarships assist students from rural and remote areas with accommodation costs. They last for up to four years and, in 2009, the annual value was $4415.
