Graduate-entry-teaching scholarships and prizes

In addition to the Marion Macaulay Bequest Scholarship and Government-funded scholarships, which are available to all undergraduate and graduate-entry students in the faculty, others that apply to students undertaking a graduate-entry qualification in education are listed on this page.



Scholarships

University of Sydney Graduate Entry Program Scholarships

These scholarships, valued at $6000 a year, are designed to provide financial support to students entering graduate teaching, graduate law, Bachelor of Dentistry or the University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP) who have demonstrated strong academic focus and other qualities including leadership, community participation and creativity.

Scholarships are awarded for study in a specified degree program and cannot be transferred. They are awarded at two levels, 'Entry', which lasts for the first year of university studies and 'Merit', which lasts for the duration of the degree. Master of Teaching Scholarships in mathematics and physics

These scholarships, valued at $6000 a year for the two years of the MTeach program, are available for Sydney University science graduates (a BSc or related degree) who have an exceptional academic record and enrol to qualify to teach either secondary mathematics (double method) or science (double method, specialising in physics). Applicants must complete the full two-year master's program.

Master of Teaching Special Entry Awards

These one-year scholarships valued at $2000 are awarded to applicants with an exceptional academic record who have applied to enter the graduate-entry secondary-school teaching program in computer studies, commerce/economics, geography or mathematics (single method).

Marion Macaulay Bequest Master of Teaching Scholarships

Three of these scholarships are offered annually for students who will enrol in the MTeach who intend to commence their studies in the current academic year. They are awarded annually for one semester only. Applicants are assessed on academic merit and a personal statement.

NSW Teachers Guild MTeach Internship Scholarship

This is an annual $1000 scholarship donated by the NSW Teachers Guild for a student in the second year of the MTeach. Application information is posted on the MTeach noticeboard and is also available from the program directors and by emailing the .

Sydney Grammar School Teacher Education Scholarships

These three annual scholarships, each of which is valued at $10,000 offer final-year MTeach students the opportunity to participate in this leading secular grammar school. Sydney Grammar is an independent boys' school with close historical ties to the University of Sydney. One of the three scholarships is reserved for an MTeach(Primary) candidate while the remaining two are open to all Mteach students. Curriculum areas of particular interest to the school include science and visual arts in both primary and secondary school; and secondary English, mathematics and music.

NSW Department of Education and Training – Teacher Education Scholarships

Scholarship holders must be undertaking an initial-teaching qualification for employment as a special education teacher or, as a secondary school teacher of science, mathematics or English. The scholarship, which lasts for the duration of the degree, comprises a $5000 annual training allowance. After qualifying as teachers, scholarship recipients will be guaranteed permanent employment in a NSW public school at an agreed location and awarded a further $3000 to assist with expenses such as relocation costs. NSW Teachers Federation Trainee Teacher Scholarships

Every year the Retired Teachers Association funds a small number of $3000 scholarships through the NSW Teachers Federation that are allocated to students in teacher-training degrees. In 2009, 12 scholarships were awarded in NSW. In general, applications close on March 31 of the year of the award.

Teachers Credit Union Future Teacher Scholarships

These five scholarships of $5000 are awarded annually to students enrolled in teacher training courses and Master of Education programs in NSW, ACT, NT and WA to cover study-related expenses such as course fees or board and lodging. Four of the scholarships are awarded to students in undergraduate courses and one to a student undertaking graduate-entry or postgraduate study. Applications are open from September to the end of January.


Prizes for course achievement

Colin Gladstone Harrison Family Scholarship

This prize of $1000 is awarded to an honours' student in the final year of a MTeach(Primary) or BEd(Primary) whose research is in the area of primary curriculum development.

John Cassim Creative Arts Award: Music

This annual prize of $650 is awarded to an Education student who – on the basis of examination results and in the opinion of the relevant program coordinator – excels in music pedagogy.

Tuh Fuh and Ruby Lee Memorial Prize in Education

This prize, established by gifts from Dr Kang Wong and Ms Esther Wong in memory of Ms Wong's late parents, is valued at $300. It is awarded each year to the student who attains the highest grade for a research-related unit of study undertaken in the final year of a graduate-entry or undergraduate teaching degree.
