Colloquium in Higher Education

Introduction & Overview

The Faculty of Education and Social Work is pleased to announce a new initiative concerning universities and higher education.

From second semester 2007 we shall be presenting a monthly Colloquium series concerned with Higher Education Issues: Policy and Research.

The Series was launched jointly by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Derrick Armstrong, (also currently Acting Deputy Provost, Learning and Teaching) and Visiting Professor Deryck Schreuder (current Chair of AUQA and former President of the AVCC) on July 24.

An outstanding set of speakers will address key issues from a variety of perspectives including:

  • university leadership and management,
  • public policy and policy making,
  • quality assurance and rankings,
  • educational theory and student learning,
  • institutional histories and internationalisation

Other speakers for this coming semester will include:

  • Professor Simon Marginson, Chair of Higher Education, University of Melbourne,
  • Mr Michael Gallagher, Executive Director, Group of Eight,
  • Professor Richard Johnstone, Executive Director, Carrick Institute,
  • Ms Catherine Armitage, Higher Education Editor, The Australian, and
  • Professor Ingrid Moses, Chancellor, University of Canberra

The Colloquium will meet in the Old Teachers College (A22) at 5 pm (see timetable below for room numbers), preceded by a welcoming afternoon tea/coffee from 4.30 pm. We aim to ensure that there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion on the issues raised.

We would warmly welcome you to the Colloquium at a time when universities are not only a major issue for the Federal Election year, but when their future forms and missions are in transformative change.

We very much feel it is time that the Faculty and the University offered a lead in debating these issues within Sydney.
