Applying for ethics approval
The Faculty reviews all ethics applications prior to sign off and submission to the University Ethics Office. All staff and students should consult the Faculty ethics flow chart and guidelines as a first step.
Gaining ethics clearance takes time!
Once your application has been reviewed by the Faculty ethics review team, please allow enough time for your ethics application to be signed by the Associate Dean Research. Applications received on the day ethics applications are due are unlikely to be signed. The University of Sydney Ethics Office provides all the necessary information to complete your ethics application.
Contact Associate Professor Jenny O'Dea to seek advice on ethics submissions.
Applying for grants
The Australian Government collects data on the types of research being conducted. When you apply for a grant it is necessary to nominate your research areas using the Fields of Research (FOR) codes. In addition, you will be asked to select the impact area for any research being proposed or undertaken by using the Socio-Economic Objectives (SEO) codes. These codes are part of the
ANZSIC Classification. Further information is available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Research in NSW government schools
It is necessary to apply for separate ethics clearance from the NSW Department of Education and Training when proposing research in NSW government schools.
