Visiting Scholar - Policy
A program for visiting scholars for periods of less than 12 months in duration.
The Faculty of Education and Social Work receives many inquiries about the Visiting Scholar program. Regrettably, we are able to accept only a limited number of visiting scholars per year.
University policy states that: ‘The title of Visiting Scholar may be conferred on suitably qualified visitors who wish to exchange expertise, carry out joint research, etc., with members of a faculty.’
The Faculty interprets this to mean that (as a general rule) a visiting scholar will have a background and/or current research directions compatible with members of the Faculty’s teaching and research staff.
Applicants are advised to initiate contact with a staff member who shares their research interest, describing their research project, how they intend to conduct research and the preferred length of their visit, commencement and end dates for the visit. Lists of staff and their research expertise and research interests are available on the faculty website. It is necessary that a staff member be prepared to sponsor a proposed Visiting Scholar.
It will be to the advantage of applicants if they can show that as a result of their term as a Visiting Scholar they will publish or jointly publish with a Faculty member original research that acknowledges their affiliation with the Faculty of Education and Social Work.
Once this sponsorship is agreed, applicants must complete the Visiting Scholar Application Form.
This form gives further information about the University’s requirements for the appointment of a Visiting Scholar.
The following is a set of general guidelines for the submission of applications for visiting scholar status in the Faculty.
Applicants for status as a visiting scholar must submit documentation attesting to the following:
- Full curriculum vitae, including:
- Complete publications list, including conference presentations, and
- An overview of research work to be undertaken while at the University of Sydney.

- Seminar(s),
- Staff colloquia,
- Guest lecture(s),
- Publish research or contribute a paper to conference, for inclusion in the Faculty research profile,
- Expected outcomes of the visit.
During the term of the visit, a visiting scholar may be entitled to the following:
- A desk (which may be in a shared office),
- A computer,
- Access to a local telephone line,
- Access to e-mail,
- Restricted access to photocopying facilities (at the discretion of the Pro-Dean Development),
- Library access, and
- attendance at relevant seminars and lectures (with permission of the instructor).
Application to be appointed as a Visiting Scholar may be lodged at anytime of year. The period of notice prior to the intended visit required by Faculty will be normally six months. The term for a Visiting Scholar will be up to and not exceeding 12 months except in exceptional situations.
The application is submitted to the Pro-Dean (Staffing); approval is then sought from the Dean of the Faculty.
The Faculty provides no financial assistance to visiting scholars. Visiting scholars need to have made provision for their travel, accommodation, sustenance and incidental costs while in Sydney. Information on the cost of living in Sydney cost of living in Sydney can be found on the University of Sydney website. Applicants are strongly advised to make their own independent enquiries about living costs.
